4:17-24
Put on the new self

Rev. Daehyun Shin[2005/10/30]

There are two kinds of senses for a human being. One is sensitivity and the other is sensuality. The Bible says that the Gentiles have lost all sensitivity (v 18). This means that the only sense that is left for all Adam's descendants is sensuality. How, then, do we define the sensuality? Everything that disappears with your body as you die is sensuality.

On the contrary, sensitivity is spiritual capacity within God's people. It is regained as they are born from above by God. So, the sensitivity is a person's true eternal life-organ whereas sensuality is his/her temporary lifetime physical function. With the sensitivity they "no longer live in the futility of their thinking" (v 17). They "are not darkened in their understanding" (v 18). Their hearts are recovered from hardening. They are no longer ignorant of the life of God. Their eyes are opened to the truth.

Therefore, they cannot go back to the way of life of the Gentiles, who "having lost all sensitivity, have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more" (v 18). God's people did not come to know Christ "that way" (v 20). They did not meet Jesus to satisfy their physical needs (Phil 3:19). They must not want to ¡®feel' Jesus to feed their desires. Their faith mode is not ¡®what you feel is what you get' (John 7:24). Their faith stands on the truth. Yes, they "were taught in Christ in accordance with truth which is in Jesus" (v 21). It was possible for them to be taught in Christ due to God-given ¡®sensitivity'.

Mustn't they then "put off their old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of their minds (v 22; cf. Romans 12:2)? Having been renewed in their sensitivity they should be freed from their former sensual way of life. Instead, they should "put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness" (v 24). God's people as Christians with renewed thinking and understanding hearts should live up to God's way of life by foremost being taught in truth.
