■ 1 --- He calls it 'effectual' because the Lord was blessing his labour, and making his teaching efficacious by the power of His Spirit. ■ 6 --- These are not subtle evasions but a simple explanation of the difficulty for while Scripture teaches that we never obtain the forgiveness of our sins without repentance, at the same time it teaches in many places that the only ground of our forgiveness is the mercy of God.
